Family of Cornelius^7 Montgomery
Cornelius^7 Montgomery (Rebecca^6, John^5, Paul^4,
Garret^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes), b. 26 June 1827, Murray Twp, Northumberland,
Ont, CAN (30 July 02 emails from Donna Ewins, researcher of Lassens of Dutchess County, and Jack Montgomery) Donna wondered about the 15 March 1858 marriage date for Cornelius and Elizabeth Ann (Lawson) Montgomery when son, Ambrose, was b. 28 May 1857. In response...Jack writes... The marriage date of Wesley's parents was contained in LDS Film #1030061 which I perused a few years ago. Cornelius' age was not given, but was either 30 or 31. The Family Bible gives his birth year as 1826 but the 1901 census shows 1827, both with 26 June date. People didn't seem to care for accuracy. Elizabeth Ann's age at marriage showed as 22, but the birth date in 1901 census, 19 May 1837, makes her only 20. Now
to Ambrose Wesley. The Bible shows his birth as 11 December 1859 but as with
most family registers and bibles the all important dates are not necessarily
entered soon after the event, but maybe years later when time has dimmed
memories. This family bible has dates going back to 1785 and 1786. The only
other date that I have seen in print for Wesley's birth is that given in the
1901 census as 28 May 1857. Possibly this date was transcribed incorrectly,
however, his age given in the various censuses 1861 to 1901 don't agree with a
Dec 1859 birth date. As you probably know the age is supposed to be at the time
of the census. If Wesley had been born in Dec 1859 he SHOULD have been recorded
as 1 year in April 1861 (census time). BUT he is show as 3 years which makes the
May 1857 very accurate. He would have turned 4 the month after census. The
census years and ages that followed -- 1871 (12 years), 1881 (22 years),
1891 (30 years), did not reflect a birth date of May 1857 or December 1859
BUT...closer to 1859. In summary, I can see an error being made in recording a
20 or 22 year old in a census, but not in the case of a baby like Wesley who, if
born in Dec. 1859 was 16 months old and not 3 years (almost 4). If I was a
betting man I would put my money on the 1857 date for his birth. In the days of
traveling ministers it was not uncommon for the marriage with an attending
reverend to take place a year or so after the cohabitation began. |
